Is Yakima The Swing City?

Is Yakima The Swing City?

By Steve Wellman

Two candidates for Washington State governor, doing battle again. The last race was oh-so-close. Now both sides say the outcome of this governor's race will be decided right here in Central Washington. The Democrats…

"Central Washington is gonna be the swing because right here voters will go either way," says Tony Sandoval of the Gregoire campaign.

And the Republicans:

Rossi supporter Anita Golladay says "I believe that it is and we have enough Republican votes out here."

Both sides will ramp up advertising and appearances as the election nears, but right now both are employing similar strategies.

Sandoval says, "We're going door to door. We're knocking and we're going back twice and three times."

"Right now we've been going door to door but we've been doing a lot of phone banking and successful fundraisers," explains Golladay.

Polls show a close race, and unless there's some kind of unexpected event, it should stay that way. That's why the push is on, right here in our area.

Steve Wellman says."Later on this fall both candidates will be here in the Capitol Theater for a debate. Chances are though that by that time, most of the voters in this area will have already made up their minds."
And our local decisions, according to the campaigns, will likely determine our next governor.

A few people we spoke with said they agree.
"I came from the other side and people think their vote here doesn't count but it does."
"I'm looking for a good change."
"This time I hope we don't count the felons."
"It would be nice if we had that kind of persuasion."
