Dusty Selah
By Audrey Asistio
YAKIMA -- Strong wind brings more blowing dust to people who live near a Selah mining site.
Granite Northwest Mining Company has been crushing rocks on Selah's hills since the 1990's. It never seemed to cause neighbors any problems, until now. Action News received a phone call about a lot of dust in that area, so we wanted to check it out ourselves. When Action News reporter Audrey Asistio got out of her car, dust flew in her eyes and mouth and she could hardly breathe. James Robinson lives in the area. He had the same problem when he got up this morning, and it ruined his daily routine. James Robinson said, "Well, I walk there down to East Selah Road and over to the other place. I walk to my son's house there, it's a mile and I walk back, it's a mile.” He wasn't able to walk to his son's house this morning. James says the dust is only getting worse, and it is causing his asthma to act up. “It's an ongoing problem at different times. You probably notice from the freeway, you've been getting the diesel smell here. Combined with all that, it's a build-up," he tells Action News. Granite Northwest's operations manager couldn't speak on camera, but he told Action News he was not aware of the dust build-up. The company uses a water truck to keep the dust down so it does not become a problem. The company is not breaking any city regulations, even though the dust has become a problem. Granite Northwest's manager says since Action News told him of the issue, He's planning to get more water trucks to help control the problem. James hopes there's a change soon , because the dust is too much to stay as it is. |
