Toddler Swallows Meth

Toddler Swallows Meth

"He had actually eaten it and overdosed on it." We'll call this grandmother "Jane" to protect her identity. She talks of a horrible experience; learning that her two year old grandson had eaten meth, gotten very sick, and had to be flown to Seattle for treatment.
"He was convulsing and he was in intensive care," she says, shaking her head. "ICU..that's pretty serious."

But now, Jane believes family members who should be held criminally responsible are getting off the hook. A urine test cleared the mother of any recent meth use. Child Protective Services also looked into the case. Jane explains "They do a urinalysis on Mom and she's clean by then… so they release him back into her custody."

Jane tells Action News there's a cover up. She claims family members taking care of the child at the time he ate the meth are lying about where the child found the drug. "(Name withheld), the mother, admitted to my son that it was actually at grandma and grandpa's house that he ate the meth."

Jane is upset that no arrests have been made…and is worried the child might still be in danger. I spoke to Yakima Sheriff's Detectives to get their side of the story. Chief Detective Stew Graham was familiar with the case. "At the time of our investigation we were unable to locate the source of the methamphetamine," says Graham. "The child was in and out of the residence."

Because of that, Graham says the Sheriff's Department closed its case. This may not be the end of the story though. Jane says she's been in touch with CPS, giving them more information; she believes they'll now look more closely into the case.
