Building Over Yakima's History

Building Over Yakima's History

Yakima -- Sullivan's and Cascade Shade were staples to downtown Yakima and our history.

They'd each been right here on this corner for around 60 years.

But they've both been demolished to make room for a new Walgreen's.

Bill Lover, City Councilman says, "I think we're helping where we can when people come to us with historic projects I think we're right there to help them."

The Wilson Building could be next on the chopping block to make room for a Capitol Theatre expansion.

People asked why the city isn't doing anything to stop it.

Scott Irons, Yakima Historic Preservation says, "I think they came up with 92 buildings that are just in this downtown core area that have a historic fabric."

Turns out part of the problem is with the system, not the city.

With 15 buildings on a local historic list there is a Historic Preservation Commission but it's made up of volunteers who have no power.

Sade Malloy, Action News says, "Do we need to put more money into the Historic Preservation Commission?
Bill Lover, City Councilman says, "I think they could use a small influx they are mainly an administrative side of our preservation."

All they do is make recommendations on nominations for historic buildings.

They don't list buildings to save the property owner has to come to them.

One big reason some older buildings aren't saved is because they're too expensive to preserve.

It's much cheaper to just tear them down.
