'Not only have you injured someone, but now you've lost your freedom'

YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Nob Hill street racing accident Thursday left a woman and her 4-year-old son in the hospital. Action News learned that woman is 26-year-old Devon Parks.
She and her son are still in the hospital recovering.
Meanwhile the two men racing are in the Yakima county jail.
Bail was set at $50,000 for the car who hit Parks and $10,000 for the other.
"Lady looked to her left, probably saw vehicle coming east on Nob Hill. But there's no way she could gauge their speed," said Yakima Police Sergeant Jay Seely.
Police said Everardo Nava and Jose Badillo Ramirez were driving double the speed limit.
It's why they're now wearing green prison garb - both facing two counts of vehicular assault.
The possible punishment? 10 years in jail and a fine of $20,000.
"That's a lot of time," Seely said. "One mistake and you can see what the result of one mistake can be. Not only have you injured someone, but now you've lost your freedom."
The injured woman, 26-year-old Devon Parks, is still recovering, now listed in fair condition.
The same goes for her four-year-old son - saved because of a top-dollar car seat and the way it was used.
"That simple bit of education could have saved her child's life?" KIMA asked.
"Absolutely there's no doubt in my mind that did save her child's life," Seely said.
Police hope more speed patrols beginning later this month will convince drivers to slow down.
Action News looked into the numbers and learned Yakima police responded to 23 racing incidents last year.
Yakima County deputies only made one arrest for street racing.
The most recent serious racing accident in Yakima came last May. It left 17-year-old Brandon Henley in critical condition.
"While the first two-to-three blocks it may be fun while your racing. One bad mistake and you can see," he said.
See the destruction that could have been a death sentence.
Nava has only minor traffic infractions on his record.
Badillo-Ramirez has a history of racing and speeding allegations.
Both are also on an immigration holds.
And yet when a kid kills his friends while doing this, we all feel sorry for him and let him off the hook.
I think the fact they are both on immigration holds is more of an issue than the racing itself.
what you don't know is that there is no way they would see anywhere near the max penalty unless they already have 10 or more felony convictions. they will be lucky to get a few months, maybe a year with a conviction.Â
This is a sad story, too often played out on our streets. Â I have met Ofc. Seely briefly and he is an excellent officer. The truth of this matter is that there is a legal way to drag race all you want in a controlled, safe environment, with an ambulance on scene! Â it's called RENEGADE RACEWAY. Â For $20 bucks, you can race all night! Â The smart street racers know this, and go there often, and any race night several tuner cars are there having fun, often with the whole family. Spread the word around, if you want to go racing, and do it legal, with trophy's, spectators and have a whole lot of fun...check out RENEGADE RACEWAY!

"According to police, Badillo said the Jeep driver was harassing him for several blocks before the collision, that he never exceed the speed limit by more than 10 mph, and that he had dropped back about a block moments before the crash.
He said he failed to stop because he had no liability insurance as required by law, police said. He said he also did not know the driver of the Jeep."
Forgive the lack of belief.... He was pictured racing just moments before the accident.....His vehicle didnt't "fail" to stop when he drove it home to hide from getting caught.Although he didn't actually become directly involved in the accident, he was a contributing factor AND he "DELIBERATELY FLED the scene " of the accident at he had involvement in..Zero credibility
Do they have insurance to help this family?
Our prayers go out to the mother and child . And great job to the little man who took pic , to help get the other driver.
The 3rd grader that snapped a picture deserves some kind of reward. He is a hero!!! Great job. Prayers to the mother and child.
