TERRACE HEIGHTS, Wash.-- A 25 year old pregnant woman is in critical condition after deputies say she was shot by her husband. Yakima County deputies got called to a home on Nola Loop road before dawn. They found the pregnant woman living there shot at least twice.
"It's just kind of bizarre to have things happening on your street when you're in a pretty nice neighborhood," said Jessa Dierinia, who lives nearby.
The case seems to be strangely similar the murder case surrounding South African Olympian Oscar Pistorius. The amputee shot and killed his model girlfriend claiming he thought she was an intruder. Deputies say the woman here was shot by her husband He also claimed he thought there was an intruder.
"The whole street was jam packed with police cars," said Dieanne Zeutenhorst, another neighbor.
Deputies say the husband told them he was startled by the sound of someone rummaging through their bedroom and started firing. When he realized it was his wife, he called 911. Neighbors tell me the couple lived here for about six months.
"They weren't ever, obviously, loud or crazy or anything like that," said Chris Ford who lives a few housed away. "Just normal people."
KIMA learned the husband has a military background. Deputies say his service doesn't seem to be a factor in what happened, but they are looking into the possibility of PTSD. Neighbor Chris Ford has a hard time understanding what happened and has to figure out how he'll tell his kids what happened on their street.
"I don't know how I'm going to explain it yet," said Ford. "I'll mill on it for the rest of the day, but it's not going to be an easy conversation."
For now, deputies say the husband is cooperating and he is not in custody. Deputies have not identified the husband or wife. The woman is in critical condition. There is no word on the condition of her baby.
