Flood Warning Tonight

Flood Warning Tonight

By Robin Woodson

NACHES RIVER -- It was doubtful by many the Valley would even see a flood.

Now, the fast melting snow is pouring into the Naches and Yakima rivers and water's predicted to exceed flood levels.

A flood warning for both rivers was expected this weekend, but since the water has gone up since yesterday, floods are expected late tonight until further notice.

The Naches river is expected to rise above flood stage and continue to rise nearly 20 feet by Sunday afternoon.

At 20 feet, residents along the Naches and north end of the Yakima river could see major flooding to their property.

Harvy Mitchell lives near a branch of the Naches river.

He says he lost half his home in the flood of '96, and he's not looking forward to re-living it.

"It could happen again, but we think we'll be okay, because the ice played a big part in it in February, which now, it's just going to be water, we hope," Mitchell said.

Yakima Emergency Managers say they're still keeping a close eye on the rivers.

They say if the forecast is accurate, they can't determine what kind of damages we'll see, but suggest residents along the rivers have an escape plan.

They also insist no one, unless you're specially trained or equipped, go swimming or lay out anywhere near the rivers this weekend.

They also plan to meet tomorrow to start getting ready for flooding.

Benton County Emergency Management tells Action News, it's also keeping an eye on the Yakima, and leaders are warning everyone to stay away from the water.
