Are Recent Gang Shootings Random Or Over Turf?
By Sade Malloy
Yakima -- Cassy Frayle, house is being shot at says, "1,2,3 holes."
All aimed at this house on East First Avenue in Toppenish. Cassy Frayle says she and her family just moved into this neighborhood and have nothing to do with gangs. But Toppenish Police say otherwise. Sgt. Adam Diaz, Toppenish Police Department says, "Norteno gang members moving into an area that's predominantly a Sureno gang area, that causes problems right away." Problems that have lead to an increase in graffiti and gang members flashing their colors. All you have to do is read the writing on the wall to see how things are going to play out. Take a look at this graffiti you can see La Raza in red has been "X'd" out by blue writing. Cassy Frayle, house is being shot at says, "I'm almost about ready to put a big old sign up on my house that says we're not gang affiliated stop shooting at my house." No on has been killed in any of the drive-bys. But if the cops' theory is correct and this recent gang activity is a turf war. Why would gang members move into their rivals neighborhood? For protection. Sgt. Adam Diaz, Toppenish Police Department says, "Maybe hoping that there'll be less problems sometimes that's not the case." Toppenish Police are refocusing and putting at least four more officers on the streets. They're also doing sweeps of the East and Southsides of Toppenish where all the shootings have been happening to be prepared. Because with the warm weather here police say its not uncommon for gang activity to increase. |
