Hot Temps And High Waters

Hot Temps And High Waters

By Robin Woodson

YAKIMA -- The cool water may look tempting this weekend, but with high temperatures in the forecast, people who live near the river may have something to worry about.

"I'm just worried that it'll flood," Wapato resident, Zeferina Padilla, said.

Padilla didn't have her home on the Yakima River the last time a flood hit, but she says she's already heard the stories.

"It took like a bus that was here and it took a little house, so I don't know, I'm kind of concerned about that," Padilla explained.

Her concern comes from a prediction by the National Weather Service.

They say the 80-90 degree weather expected this weekend could melt enough mountain snow to raise or possibly flood local rivers.

"I won't be around, I'm scared because I don't know how to swim," Padilla said.

And for folks near the Naches river, the news is nothing new.

"They say that every year," Naches resident, James Peddicord, said.

Peddicord says he's lived on the river for two decades and, right now, he says everything looks OK.

"As a rule, the river comes up a pinch and this right here soaks up a little bit, and it's dry as a bone," Peddicord explained.

But he's not ruling out the possibility of a flood.

When asked, "As far as your concerned, no worries?"

Peddicord responded, "I'd keep an eye on it, it's, the river's the river."

While some say they're not concerned about the rivers flooding this weekend, they also say they're waiting to see what Mother Nature has planned.

Yakima emergency managers tell Action News, their crews are keeping a close eye on the rivers, but they don't expect a flood or significant damages.
