Curvy Road Causing A Problem
By Robin Woodson
NEAR TAMPICO -- It doesn't look dangerous, but just ask Hiram White how big a problem drivers and this corner can be.
"We've had three car wrecks where people hit the bridge and take out the bridge," Hiram White explained. Hiram would know because he lives right next door to where the wrecks happen. He says, lately, they're starting to hit closer to home. Like Tuesday morning, when he woke up to a truck on his front lawn. The homeowner tells Action News, the truck crashed at the guardrail, then slid on the gravel, and ultimately slammed into their long standing fence and arborvitae. "Sometimes they'd hit our cars if they were parked off to the side," White added. Hiram says he's worried drivers aren't paying attention to the road and winding up a mess on his property. When asked, "2 cars, your property, aren't you a little frustrated?" White responded, "It's getting a little frustrating, I'm happy it isn't drinking and driving." "There shouldn't be a problem, it all comes down to people just being careful," Yakima County Public Works Rep, Mark Cleaver, said. The department says the corner has a track record of being hit, but that's all. There's not enough incidences for them to change things right now. "There's bridges like this all over the County and it's a matter of priorities and money," Cleaver added. "The bridge can be fixed, people just have to pay more attention when they're driving." Hiram agrees with Public Works that not much can be done to change the problem. As for a quick fix, he says it's just a simple case of drivers paying more attention to the road. Public Works also says, if Hiram's property continues to be affected, they'll look into ways of changing the street. |
