Community Saves Woman's Vision
By Rudabeh Shahbazi
PASCO-- Since her emergency eye surgery last week, Stefanie Matheney-Reynolds spends her days keeping very still with her head down.
The 19-year-old realized something was wrong when her vision was grew blurry, and started feeling dizzy and vomiting. "I didn't really think anything of it, just thought maybe I needed glasses," she said. But she went to the doctor anyway, who sent her to a specialist, who told her she needed surgery for a detached retina if she wanted to see out of that eye again-- and fast. "I needed it in two days, so everyone was like, 'I'm sorry, we can't help you.' At that point, I kind of gave up," she said. "I was like, I don't know what I'm going to do." When she heard the news, surgery wasn't her only worry. "I didn't even think about the surgery, or me going blind at that point," said Matheney-Reynolds. "Anything in this world, you need insurance, because you can't just pay out of pocket $10,000." In just two days, her college came up with $1,500 for the surgery, and her coworkers at Professional Products put in another $500. "They pretty much saved me from losing my sight," said Matheney-Reynolds, who says the all the support has made her experience easier. But that relief was short-lived. She won't know if she will be able to see out of that eye again for another couple weeks, and she still needs to come up with the rest of the money for the surgery. You can help her raise the money she needs for future surgeries. Professional Products in Walla Walla is taking donations, and there is also an account in her name at Baker Boyer Bank. |
