MOXEE, Wash. -- Many of you have been wondering what that stench was around town. Some thought it smelled like pot and others like cigar smoke.
The East Valley fire department said the smell was actually from a massive hay fire that sparked Monday morning.
It happened at Devries Dairy Farm near Moxee. Some of the hay was still smoldering Tuesday.
The owner of the farm estimates up to 400 tons of hay burned.
"Anytime you lose something of that value it's always psychologically hard on you -- just mentally thinking about the fact that you lost it," said farm owner Tom Devries.
Firefighters blame spontaneous combustion.
A level two burn pan was put in place today for Yakima County. Conditions are expected to improve by Thursday.
