YAKIMA, Wash. -- The driver who ran over two brothers on their way to school this morning was on drugs, according to police. He was identified as 32-year-old Benjamin McKenzie of Yakima. The 10-year-old boy is in a fight for his life while his 11-year-old brother is also in the hospital.
Neighbors have been worried for years that a day like this would come.
"One ambulance came," neighbor Gary McGuire said. "Then I heard another one and then there was a fire engine and police and I knew it was something big."
"I was getting out of the shower and I heard the ambulance so I came out to see what was going on," said neighbor Sonia Sandoval.
Police said two brothers, 10 and 11, were waiting for their school bus when they were run over by a car.
"Based on preliminary information, they were finger drawing on the window in the dew," said Captain Rod Light, Yakima police spokesperson.
Officers said hit the boys they were pulled under the car and dragged about 80 feet until the car stopped. Emergency crews needed a car jack to free them.
"I saw the dad almost screaming crying and it's kind of hard I don't have children myself but it's hard," Sandoval said.
Police said a car was driving northbound on Rock Avenue when it hit a blue truck that was parked along with a white car and then the two boys. A witness said a neighbor was yelling at the driver to stop, but he continued until a school bus blocked the road.
Police don't know if he was trying get away, but they now believe he was on drugs.
Neighbors said speeding is a constant problem on the street.
"We see people speeding more than 30, 40, 50 miles per hour," Sandoval said.
"A dog got hit the other day and I'm surprised this hasn't happened before, but it's unfortunate this has happened," McGuire said. "I just pray to God that these children make it and I pray for their families."
Neighbors hope drivers will now slow down and pay attention.
Police say the 10-year-old has broken bones and head trauma. The 11-year-old is being treated in Yakima.
McKenzie is in jail on vehicular assault charges. Bond has not been set.
It's unclear what kind of drugs McKenzie is suspected of using prior to the crash. Toxicology reports would eventually reveal that.
