SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- A crowd gathered Monday in Sunnyside to unveil a statue of a favorite daughter who reached for the stars.
Sunnyside dedicated a bronze statue of astronaut Bonnie Dunbar.
Dunbar grew up in Sunnyside and grew up to fly five space shuttle missions during her time with NASA. She spent more than 50 days in space.
She says the Yakima Valley community provided all the support she needed.
"Growing up here and having the family I did and the schools, the community makes all the difference," Bonnie Dunbar said. "Believe it or not, nobody ever told me here I couldn't follow my dreams. Not one single person."
The Bronze Society raised the money to pay for the statue.
