Water Worries In West Richland

Water worries have a West Richland neighborhood heated and outraged.

At Monday's City Council meeting, homeowners who live around 58-th and Norma Street gave city leaders an ear full of reasons why the "Columbia Irrigation District" should not build a water storage pond in their neighborhood.

They claim the 6-million gallon water storage pond was planned without them, they don't even get to use the water, and they say it would be an eye-sore to the community.

Despite the Mayor telling everybody who came to sound-off about the issue to save their comments for a workshop planned for next week, people didn't hesitate to speak out.

"There was no indication a large piece of equipment would start digging a 6 to 8 foot trench along the border of our property, that's a safety hazard," said John Roberts.

"No one knew, a couple blocks away and nobody knew it was in the works or this far along," said another West Richland neighbor.

The Mayor says staff is looking into alternatives like relocating the project.

He also says the city will have some influence on C-I-D's decision.

But he adds to not assume it will be an above ground structure.

There is a workshop planned solely for this topic on November 26th and 6pm in the Council Chambers.
