Bridge On I-90 Gets Demolished

EASTON -- It's 6 inches that's going to cost a truck driver almost a million big ones.

The driver was taking an oversized cylinder to Ephrata when his equipment took out chunks of the bridge.

He hired a pilot truck, but was never warned to get off the freeway.

The truck hit the underside of the bridge, taking apart the support cables.

DOT decided to demolish that part of the bridge, because it would be too hazardous for traffic driving on it or under it.

They say the bridge was 17 feet high and the load was that plus 6 inches.

Once crews are done, they don't plan on rebuilding the bridge until next spring.

In the meantime, commuters will have to use other exits to get around.

Some business owners and residents feel, as long as the bridge isn't there, they will be taking the biggest hit.

Christie Baston owns CB's General Store in Easton.

She said, "It could be a huge loss of revenue for us because we, lose, we depend on the freeway traffic, I mean it's a small community here, there's not that many people who live here full time, so we depend on the freeway traffic."

The driver of the truck is getting the bill for the mess.

DOT says taking down the bridge and putting it back together could cost at least $750,000.

Crews plan to have the bridge completely demolished by morning.
