YAKIMA, Wash. -- Protecting the water you drink. Planning for that future was on the minds of leaders from three counties today.

All the groundwater in Yakima County is accounted for. It means you can't build a new well without possibly stealing water from neighbors.

The Department of Ecology is trying to solve the problem with Yakima, Kittitas and Benton counties.

"This is an important issue that needs to be addressed and can no longer be ignored. And that's simply what we're doing at this point and time is addressing it in a very, I believe, prudent manner," said Yakima County Commissioner, Mike Leita.

One plan calls for a daily water limit on each property.
The three counties hope to have a solid plan in place later this year.
