YAKIMA, Wash. -- Action News learned Yakima is now considering hiring two new fire inspectors for the city.

Budget cuts forced the city to lay off a fire inspector last year. But in the aftermath of public safety concerns, the city is now considering a plan that would rehire two inspectors.

The positions are part of the preliminary 2013 budget. Under the plans two fire inspectors would work at the Yakima fire department.

"What that does for businesses is, of course, it will satisfy insurance requests," said Yakima Fire Chief Dave Willson. "And for the citizens, we are making sure places of public assembly like movie theaters and restaurants are safe for them to go to."

Money for the new inspectors would come from a city usage fee. Businesses would pay about $40 a year to be inspected.
