YAKIMA, Wash. -- KIMA found out there's a new leader of the gang unit for the Yakima Police Department.
Sergeant David Cortez will soon be in charge of the unit. He's been with YPD for more than 15 years. The position has been vacant since Sergeant Erik Hildebrand resigned in May after repeated internal investigations including sexting a prostitute while on the job. YPD is confident Cortez is the right man for the gang unit.
"I know Sergeant Cortez, I know what his capabilities are,” said YPD spokesperson Captain Rod Light. “I know what his content is in terms of taking over this unit and what he wants to accomplish."
Sergeant Cortez will take over his new responsibility next month. YPD hopes to add more officers to the gang unit later this year.
