Gang unit expansion: YPD fills two spots

Gang unit expansion: YPD fills two spots
YAKIMA, Wash. -- More officers will soon join the Yakima Police Department's gang unit. KIMA learned two new officers were selected for the unit.

YPD says they'll be on the streets in early May.

The department still needs two more rank and file officers along with a sergeant to double the unit.

At that size, the unit will be working seven days a week.

"Are things moving a little slower than you hoped or are things on pace?" KIMA asked.

"It's right on pace," said Yakima Police Captain Rod Light. "Based on the timeline the administration set up, in terms of how we were going to fill the positions in relationship to the new hires coming on."

The fully-expanded unit is expected to be in place by August.
