YAKIMA, Wash. -- State troopers in Yakima are the first in Washington to switch to a new digital radio system. Federal rules forced the change that is required to be in effect by January 1, 2013. Troopers hope the early switch will help them work out any kinks now. The digital system goes live this week.

Troopers tell KIMA it makes more radio channels available, which means more safety for you. It cost $41 million statewide for the system. YPD will make the switch later this month.
