SUNNYSIDE, Wash. -- KIMA learned the Sunnyside school teacher suspended for giving explicit poems to students might face criminal charges.

Maria Preston is trying to keep her job as a teacher. She's been suspended since the fall.

Preston is in the middle of a lawsuit with the district and sued KIMA for asking for documents related to the case.

Now, the district tells Action News it might press criminal charges against Preston for giving the material to minors.

One woman says suspending the teacher is enough punishment.

"I would probably want a little more background, but it seems like on the surface maybe they are overstepping it just a little bit," Leah Bennett said.

The district says it's not clear if the teacher can even be charged. Administrators are waiting to hear from police.
