Preventing identity theft and drug abuse

YAKIMA, Wash.-- As identity theft goes up, Yakima County Crime Stoppers made sure more people don't end up as victims. Today, Crime Stoppers sponsored a giant shredding event so people could get rid of documents in a safe place. They also offered people the chance to throw away prescription medications.

The DEA was there to take away those pills and burn them. Meantime, authorities tell us that simply shredding documents is a way to guarantee you're not hit by identity thieves.

"Its one thing to get your house burglarized," said Crime Stoppers board member Ben Hittle. "It's another thing to have somebody steal your name and ID. That's one of the biggest crime hassles anyone could ever have now days."

Crime Stoppers holds these drop off locations twice a year. They'll be doing it again in October.
