YAKIMA, Wash. -- Volunteers at the Yakima Food Bank provide food for those in need, as you know. Tuesday, they wanted to provide emotional support as well in the fight against cancer.

They wore pink and decorated the building. Those getting food could write the name of a friend or family member who is fighting cancer or died from it.

The event stemmed from a promise the organizer made to a young girl battling the disease. He said he would dye his hair pink if she beat it.

"About a year later she came in," said Food Bank Manager Melvin Gray. "She was a little higher in spirit and she said she was six months cancer free. And she turned around and said, 'well when are you going to dye your hair pink. So that was the start of it."
