Parents hopeful donations will keep Wapato Community Center open
WAPATO, Wash. -- KIMA is following the closure of the Wapato Community Center we first told you about in the fall. The Wapato Youth Athletic League moved out of the building because it couldn't afford the insurance.

After our story, several organizations gave money. The donations would cover the yearly premium.

Elite Nursing of Yakima donated half of the $6,000 dollars that came in and hopes the center can open by summer.

"I'll be really happy about that," said Elite Nursing owner Tami McDaniels. "You know 300 kids could easily turn into 500. That would be our hope. That more kids would come to the center."

We also got a tip about the city changing locks on the building. We learned while that is true, it's just standard safety procedures. Wapato's mayor tells us he'd like to see an agreement with the league to lease the community center at Monday's council meeting.
