Judge: There will be at least two murder trials in the death of Vern Holbrook

YAKIMA, Wash.-- There will be at least two murder trials held for the death of a Yakima real estate agent. A judge decided Wednesday that at least one suspect will be tried separately from the other three.

Defense attorneys want separate trials for everyone, but so far the judge only decided on the case against Adriana Mendez.

Police say she left her three kids in the car while Vern Holbrook was murdered inside a home. Two of those kids will be called as witnesses for the state. There is a different defense attorney for each suspect.

"It's really three different trials for these jurors," defense attorney Pete Mazzone said. "It's really like we're just putting three people on trial in the same room but all, they have nothing in common with each other with respect to what we're talking about."

Holbrook was severely beaten in a home he thought he was showing to potential home buyers. He never recovered from his injuries and died earlier this year.

A bloody knife found at the scene could not be connected to any of the defendants.
