Former bishop may have helped accused rapist avoid prosecution

YAKIMA COUNTY, Wash. -- Bishop Emeritus Carlos Sevilla was back on the stand in the abuse trial against the Yakima Diocese. He was the head of the diocese when a man says he was raped as a teenager by a would-be deacon.

The plaintiff believes Sevilla helped his attacker get away. Evidence included a letter written by the bishop to the accused clergy member suggesting he not return to Yakima County.

A man known only as John Doe is suing the diocese for millions.
