YAKIMA, Wash. -- Parents were given a head start on back to school shoppin, as thousands of free backpacks full of supplies were handed out Saturday.
A total of 5,000 backpacks were given to families at the MorningStar Church in Yakima.
Some people got in line as early as 4:30 a.m. Saturday to get their hands on free supplies. Many Parents say the extra help is critical.
"There's a lot of people who don't have the privilege to be able to give their kids, you know, that are going through hardship right now and it really helps a lot!" said Maranda Davis, who waited in line for a backpack.
Money for all the free things came from church members and community donations.
This is the second year in a row the MorningStar church has put on the event.
Last year, organizers supplied 1,500 backpacks and ran out in 20 minutes.

I have the best time with my three granddaughters every August. We go to the stores and buy what we need and I pay. I'm not rich, but I taught for thirty years, and I know what it means to kids to have the things that they need. It is expensive! I wish I could help all those grateful parents.
Population 100,000? Public schools in Wa. average a 30 percent poverty rate.
What the ... ? Really?! The population in the area is less than 100K, but we have 5,000 kids show up?! I think it's time to get rid of welfare and entitlements. It's too much of an incentive for people without the means to have kids.Â
