YAKIMA, Wash. -- KIMA has continuing coverage of the two people hurt in a drag racing accident over the weekend. One remains in critical condition at a Seattle hospital.
He's 17-year-old Brandon Henley. Police say he was racing his car down 72nd Avenue when he lost control, hit a fence, power pole, parked car and a tree.
His passenger Eliseo Bahema is in stable condition but still in the hospital. Police say this is the first serious accident stemming from drag racing in recent years. But, investigators say it's becoming a problem.
"Primarily they are happening on the west side of town late at night or early in the morning," says Captain Rod Light of the Yakima Police Department. "We are doing our best to get a handle on it and get ahead of it, but it is becoming an increasing problem for us."
Police say they rely on calls from neighbors to catch drag racers. More officers will be assigned to areas where the races are common.
