They've picked the wrong poster child.

Ehren Watada doesn't deserve being hoisted up on the shoulders of Iraq war protesters and presented as the movement's hero any more than he deserves to still be referred to as Lieutenant.

He deserves what I strongly suspect the military will give him: A dishonorable discharge and a few years to ponder his navel while in federal prison.

As someone adamantly opposed to the war in Iraq, I don't get the glorification of Watada. He enlisted in the military after the invasion. He knew what he was getting into.

Only now he conveniently proclaims that after he put on the uniform, he studied up on the situation and came to the conclusion that the war is illegal and unconstitutional.

Did I miss the part about him being a lawyer and a constitutional scholar? If the anti-war movement is looking for heroes, try the men and women who neither understood or agreed with the war and yet still honored the uniform they volunteered to wear.

I'm tired of this trumped up effort to try and paint Ehren Watada as some valiant individual. At best he's an opportunist. At worst he's a coward. Either way, he's no protesting poster child for a war that should never have been.
