Rumors Are Swirling About Yakima's Growth

FROM BOB'S DESK--Have you been paying attention to the rumors that are swirling around our town?

It seems that every day there is a new one about a new business coming or a new group from out of town doing research to see what possibilities are here.

Just recently there was a group looking at the Irwin property off of 16th Avenue for a potential mall. There have been a couple of firms prior to this one who looked at that site, but this one has made the initial payment and, as I understand, it's a done deal.

You may recall that I told you there was a rumor going about that the present location of Costco would be sold and Costco would build anew and J.C. Penny would take over the present location.

Take a look at our downtown and you'll see the revamp underway.

Joe's new motel adds some color to that site and I keep hearing that something big is underway. I don't know what or where, but I keep hearing it so there must be some truth to it.

So what does it all mean I ask, and folks tell me that it is a forgone conclusion that this town is on the grow.

If you question that statement, just drive on the freeway or along 40th Avenue around 4:30 in the evening and see what traffic looks like, it is bumper to bumper for an hour and that tells me people are here.

When people are in a town, stores come to that town and business flourishes.

Our new city council appears to be business friendly and that's what it takes to build a community.

We already have a wonderful facility in the Capitol Theatre and now The Seasons adds another touch of class.

I hope we do build and improve our standing in this state, but I would be less than honest if I didn't tell you I have no interest in seeing this town become a mini-Seattle. Let me go on the record and tell you, I'd hate that!
