YAKIMA, Wash. -- Yakima City Council is moving forward with the Department of Ecology by signing up for the Voluntary Cleanup Program regarding the old Cascade Mill site.
That decision during a study session Tuesday. Mayor Micah Cawley told Action News the city will follow the recommended cleanup plan from Ecology.
That's expected in about six months. However, of four options discussed Tuesday, council members favored a middle option to partially remove the landfill waste at a cost of $12.3 million. It also includes groundwater treatment to process nitrates in the soil.
Council members discussed the pros and cons of each option as provided in a summary document from the city attorney, city manager and strategic project manager.
