U.S. - Starting January first, minimum wage workers in 13 states and four cities will receive higher paychecks

The largest increase is in Washington where the minimum wage will go up to $9.32 per hour.

Other states that will see a boost include: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Ohio, Florida, Missouri, Colorado and Oregon.

The changes have been partly fueled by nationwide walkouts this year by fast-food workers.

Nineteen states currently have minimum wages higher than the federal level of $7.25 an hour.

After the January 1st changes, that number rises to 21.
